How “The Booster” was born!
In August of 1981 I was selling silk flower arrangements at a Booth that Utah State University (Logan, Utah) sponsored for the shopping pleasure of the attendees to the Tupperware Jubilee.
During that convention, I was manning the booth we had for not only my silk flower arrangements but other items that other friends sold. I was suggesting to a customer that she could play a particular game at her parties when she said, “Why don’t you come up with a game we could play at our parties?” I thought about that and decided it would be a great idea for next year (as the convention was already half over.) However, my friend, Laura Savage decided to go home and put together a game. We did a lot of brainstorming over the weekend and invented the “Tupperware Bingo” game using Tupperware items instead of numbers in the squares. It was a great success as we sold 3,400 games in just 3 days.
Everybody wanted a “Bingo.” During the next month, Laura and I went into partnership and developed a selection of 6 games (all using Tupperware themes) and put together a mailing list of Tupperware distributors. We mailed out our literature with visions of grandeur!
Our first order came and we were so excited! But, we also received a letter from Tupperware corporate telling us to “cease and desist” using the Tupperware word on anything as it was a registered trademark. We were devastated!
As two very naïve housewives, with a total of 8 children between the two of us we were not quite sure of what to do next. We had spent our grocery money to finance things so far. We called the Tupperware attorney and asked what we should do. He was very kind and told us what guidelines to follow. But, in order to protect their trademark, he sent a letter to all his distributors telling them we were unauthorized to use the Tupperware name.
Things were really slow after that as we had to go through all kinds of hassle to fill an order. But, we persisted and the next year at Jubilee we had revised games (not using the Tupperware word) some notepads and other items. Our booth was the hit of the convention! We had a ball meeting all of the wonderful people and started creating a name list of consultants and managers.
We then changed the focus of our product line from games to other materials that could be used to help “Boost” your businesses.
Our slogan was, “Boost your sales and brighten your image.”
The letter that Tupperware Corporate sent that we were unauthorized continued to cause us frustration for 5 years. Tupperware was well aware of what we were offering and had no problem with us, but some people took that previous letter to mean they DID have problems. It was a constant battle from which I learned to be very tenacious! Finally, in 1986 we received permission from Tupperware to be in the Marriott Hotel in for their “Homecoming 40 birthday Jubilee!”
Finally, we were over the hump, because of course, Tupperware had to approve of us in order for us to be in the hotel. Before getting on the plane I was $76,000.00 in debt, due and payable in 30 days plus all the travel expenses (Just our hotel bill was $21,000.00)
We essentially went on faith, with a wing and a prayer. Thankfully, our customers were wonderfully supportive and I was only $4000.00 in debt when it was all said and done.
In addition to that, the mail order part of the business really started to take off. Since then “The Booster” has grown consistently. We have helped over 600,000 customers to be more successful. Our product line has changed some as I have continued to trust in the motto of my grandfather. He believed, “Know one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care, about them.” He believed it was important to meet your customers needs. His other motto was, “Sell the sizzle not the steak!” He emphasized how important it was to let your customers know what a product would DO for them.
He realized “Sales is King” and how important being a sales person in to the economy. YOU are what makes everything work! Without a sales force, there is no business and the economy comes to a halt.
With these concepts in mind I have continued to build the line of Booster products to help YOU be more successful. That is my goal, I believe in the party plan industry and what it offers not only the consultants and managers but what it offers hostesses and customers.
In about 1996 we divided our products into the different “Key Areas” of your business. This has made a tremendous difference to helping you understand how our products can help you in every phase of your business. The comments and letters from our customers have been overwhelmingly positive as to how these products have helped them be even more successful.
That pleases me beyond measure as that is my objective. So, here we are in our twenty-fifth year. Things are ever changing, I go to fewer conventions (they are so much work) and do more with the internet. My children are all grown and married and we have 9 ½ grandchildren. I’m still crazy enough to run the business from my home. (We do have a warehouse where the shipping process takes place) but the computers, phones, etc are still here in my converted garage.
I am blessed with an AWESOME, crazy, crew who not only care about me, they care about YOU! We have such fun!
I still LOVE doing this business! I am living my dream! I want each of you to know how important YOU are to me. YOU are the reason all this works.
It is for YOU we continue to develop over 100 new products each year. But, without YOU, we wouldn’t be successful. I thank you for your love and support whether you have been one of our original customers throughout the years, or if you have just learned about us.
Thank you, Jenny B
